WISNIEWSKI: PROPOSED TURNPIKE SALE/LEASE UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED
Transportation Chair Remains Unconvinced Road
Sale a Good Idea
(TRENTON) -
Assembly Transportation and Public Works Committee Chairman John S.
Wisniewski today commended Senator Raymond Lesniak's (D-Union)
efforts for engaging the asset monetization issue, but cautioned
that it would be a mistake to put the New Jersey Turnpike into
private hands through a sale or lease.
Wisniewski
(D-Middlesex) issued the following statement:
"I applaud Senator Lesniak's efforts in trying to find a creative
way to solve
New Jersey's
ongoing fiscal crisis.
"However, as
Governor Corzine has told us from day one, we cannot fix our
financial problems by relying on one-shot revenue deals and
financial gimmickry.
"Everyone agrees
that we need to pay down our debt and the numbers Senator Lesniak
talked about today - between $10 billion and $15 billion - certainly
makes jumping on the monetization bandwagon an attractive
temptation.
"On the other
hand, New
Jersey
government has shown a significant lack of discipline over the last
four decades when it comes to matching spending with revenues.
"Even with all
of the legal caveats in the world, there is a very strong
possibility that we would find ourselves facing the same debt and
the same fiscal crisis 10 or 20 years from now.
"No matter how
you dress it up, a sale or lease of the Turnpike and Parkway remains
a dead-end for
New Jersey
drivers."
